We demonstrate our commitment to road safety through our support and commitment to the NSW Local Government Road Safety Program.
This funding partnership with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) helps link state and local road safety priorities. It also identifies local road safety issues and contributes to future planning strategies to make our city's roads safer.
Our road safety unit works with other Council divisions and the community to help resolve road safety issues and plan for a safer environment for all road users.
We value our road safety partners who work closely together to achieve local outcomes. These include the RTA, police, PCYC, NRMA Insurance, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla councils.

Learn Safe
Free workshops for parents and supervisors.
An initiative of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama councils.
Learn Safe provides practical advice about:
- supervising learner drivers
- completing the Learner Driver Log Book
- understanding the benefits of supervised on-road driving practice
- understanding the new licence conditions for learners and provisional licence holders.
Workshops are held at Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama councils.

Learner Log Book Run
An initiative of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama councils. Supported by Lake Illawarra and Bulli PCYC, NSW Police, the RTA and the Illawarrra Road and Safety Group.
- Sundays 9.30am and 12pm; Tuesdays 6pm-8:30pm (times may vary between councils) - night time drives
- experience driving in a range of conditions
- a 'driver reviver' stop and random breath tests may also be incorporated
- learner drivers are required to have 30 hours or more of log book supervised driving.

Schools and Children
There are over 80 schools in the Wollongong area. We recognise the priority of road safety around schools and work closely with peak organisations and individual schools to raise awareness about road safety around schools.
Initiatives include:
- Wollongong School Safety Team - the team meets as required to investigate road safety issues and to promote a joint approach to road safety education pertaining to schools. The group also liaises with the City of Wollongong Traffic Committee as required. If you wish to raise a school related road safety issue please complete the road safety issue or concern form.
- We work closely with local police and rangers to assist with education campaigns, raising awareness and enforcement around schools.
Child restraints provide excellent protection for children involved in crashes.
- always use an approved child restraint
- don't carry your child in your arms
- keep your child in a rearward-facing restraint until they physically won't fit, the same applies to a forward facing child seat
- before moving to a forward-facing child seat, your child must be able to sit and easily hold their head upright.
Safe Cycling
The NSW Government in 'Action for Transport 2010' identifies the need to promote cycling through education and safety campaigns. We understand the importance of cycling and have pursued a policy of planning, implementation and development of safe cycling facilities since 1994.
We also work with the RTA and other organisations to support education and events to promote increased take up of cycling within the community, and safer cycling behaviour generally. Follow the RTA external website link below for more information and resources for safer cycling.
Each year on average 35 cyclists are killed and over 2500 are seriously injured on our roads and many more incidents go unreported. The majority of these collisions involve a motor vehicle and most are preventable. The Amy Gillett Foundation’s primary objective is to reduce the incidence of injury and death caused by the interaction between cyclists and motorists. In doing so, the Foundation hopes to promote a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between the two groups.
Traffic Committee
Our Traffic Committee meets monthy to consider traffic issues. It consists of representatives of Council, the RTA, police, public transport and the community. If you wish to raise a matter contact the committee directly.
