Current roadworks and WCC maintenance

We’ve just completed our largest ever road infrastructure maintenance program. Since last July we’ve spent $6 million on resurfacing 40 kilometres of the city’s roads, rebuilding five roadways and completing major projects at Kelly Road, Berkeley; Gipps Road, Keiraville and Lower Coast Road, Stanwell Park.

This year we’re committing an extra $2 million to the program, which is a spending of $8 million on road projects across the city.

Keep on reading to find out what else we’re up to in your area.

In the north:

  • The culvert upgrade at Austinmer Beach  has reached a point where we were able to open the beach back up before the Christmas break. We have started some minor works including the connection of the footpath to the car park and the lights at Lawrence Hargrave Drive. When the footpath is constructed we will be adding additional seating and bins
  • Stanhope Street has been upgraded. A new road pavement and footpath has been installed in Stanhope Street
  • Stage 2 of the Thirroul Commercial Centre upgrade commenced in September 2007 from Raymond Road to Railway Street. Stage 3 will continue south of the railway line to Thirroul shops
  • Council has completed several projects to correspond with the RTA’s Northern Distributor extension. This first project includes several pedestrian facilities on Park Road, Woonona,  as well as projects in Grey Street and Campbell streets, Woonona
  • Road works have been completed on Lower Coast Road, Stanwell Park. Drainage and road improvements were completed in April

In the centre:

  • We are continuing to deliver quality projects and will be commencing new public space improvement projects soon
  • Two major road reconstructions have been completed this financial year for Elliots Road Fairy Meadow and Montague Street, North Wollongong. These works addressed structural failures of the road due to the high traffic volume and heavy vehicle loads
  • The upgrade of the footpath area near the car parks on Flagstaff Hill are nearing completion, the final tree guards are being installed to finish this area which includes a new shower. Further extensions are planned as part of the Blue Mile program in coming years
  • The first two roundabouts have been completed at the intersection of Church and Gipps streets and Swan and Kembla Streets Wollongong. These roundabouts were constructed with funds from Council and developer contributions or the federal black spots program
  • Minor upgrades to the footpaths in Loftus and Mercury have started to repair. The works are being undertaken as a result of condition assessments undertaken on the cities footpath network and prioritisation of the results of this audit
  • A small new section of cycleway has been installed on Irvine Street, Keiraville. This forms part of the route from Wollongong to the University and is part of the program to reduce traffic around the university

In the south:

  • The re-construction and upgrade of Wetheril Park carpark in Primbee began in April. This involves re-aligning the playing field and formalising the carpark with sealed pavement. It also incorporated some kerb and gutter work and some minor drainage improvements
  • Reconstruction of the central pavement between Amaroo Avenue and Suttor Place, Figtree is complete
  • The construction of a new roundabout is completed at the intersection of Cowper Street and Shellharbour Road, Port Kembla
  • Construction of a new bus turn around facility and bus bay on Cleveland Road, Dapto, has been completed. These major works are being constructed in conjunction with the replacement of the Cleveland Road rail bridge currently under construction by RailCorp. Construction of the pedestrian footbridge began in April
