Extended swim season evaluation

In response to projects listed in our 2008-12 Management Plan, Council undertook a review of all beach and pool operating hours this season.

This review included an evaluation of winter seasons at North Wollongong Beach and Continental Pool and extended swimming seasons (from 26 April to 9 June 2008) at Stanwell Park, Thirroul and Port Kembla beaches plus Thirroul and Port Kembla salt water pools.

The community survey component of the review that was conducted with Wollongong residents to gauge usage patterns and their opinions about the service. Attendance was also monitored by onsite lifeguards at each beach and saltwater pool location. The attendance data collected was independently audited for accuracy.  The Extended Swim Season Findings document on the right contains more detailed information about Council's Beach and Pool operating hours and the review findings.

Key review recommendations that will be implemented include:

• The continuation of year round Lifeguard patrols and operations at North Wollongong Beach and the Continental Pool, Wollongong.
• All other Council Beach Lifeguard Patrols and seasonal saltwater pools will conclude operations on 24 April 2009.
