The Bush Tucker Garden will provide students and visitors to the Garden with an opportunity to learn about Australian Culture within a natural setting. It will be a unique space within the Botanic Garden as visitors will be encouraged to pick plants and walk within actual garden beds to learn how local Illawarra plants were used for food, fibre, or medicine.
Members of the Local Aboriginal Community are working with the Wollongong Botanic Garden on the development of learning resources for this site.
Traditional shelter making and small performances will also take place within this Garden.
The Bush Tucker Garden project commenced construction in January 2011 and is being built in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and members of the local Aboriginal community.
Through CVA's Green Jobs Corps Program local young people have been working at the site two days a week over a six month period. The aim of this programs is to provide career development opportunities for young people as those who have participated will gain formal qualifications in Conservation and Land Management.
The Bush Tucker Garden, located at the Eastern edge of the Illawarra Rainforest, is scheduled for completion in September 2011.
