Waste Wise Challenge - Nude Food. What's in Your Lunchbox

The Botanic Garden and the Discovery Centre's team are on a mission to reduce the amount of rubbish they send to landfill.

We already have multiple worm farms and compost heaps, but we need everyone’s help to be able to feed them. We also want to see very little rubbish from lunches and recess going into the dreaded red bin that goes straight to landfill. That’s why we are offering great prizes for the schools that bring in the least amount of non-recyclable or reusable items during their visit.

The waste wise challenge aims to encourage and educate groups and their families to bring nude food meaning that it has minimal packaging and then rewarding groups for doing so.

The Waste Wise Challenge is simple. All you have to do is bring food that’s nude!

  • With all of the confirmation letters sent after making a booking a separate waste wise  pamphlet will attached that can be sent home with the children outlining how there children can join in on the challenge.
  • A carbon credit system will be devised to measure how much waste is being thrown out to landfill and how much is going to the compost and the worm farm. The results will be calculated as an average per person so that comparison can be made between different sized groups.
  • At the end of each lunch time session a mini waste audit will calculate the volume and weight created during the day with the children participating. A daily target will be set and if this is achieved then immediate prizes will be given to all students
  • At the end of the waste audit data will be entered into a data base and at the end of each term major prizes will be given to schools that have achieved the lowest score during their visit.
