What better place to learn about environment and gardening than at one of the most spectacular gardens in the Illawarra. The Discovery Centre runs a number of workshops and short courses for all skills levels, ages and interests.

 Seasonal Kitchen Garden Tomatoes and Preserves

  Learn about the maintenance and types of crops you can sow and harvest in mid summer. Help harvest the tomatoes at the Discovery Centre to make tomato sauce

 Community Bushwalks

  Join one of our experienced Botanic Garden horticulturalists and naturalist on a journey through one of the Illawarra's many walking trails. These guided walks offer expert knowledge on the local area.

Nocturnal Walks

See the world through the eyes of a nocturnal animal as you go on a mystery tour of the garden at dusk.

Frogs of the Illawarra

Learn about the diversity of amphibians in the Illawarra through their calls, while also looking for live specimens to visually identify. This workshop will have light refreshments provided.

Habitat Gardening Workshop

At this workshop you'll create a little piece of habitat, while learning about the features needed to create a habitat, various design techniques, materials to use and plant identification. 

Mother's Day Recycled Jewellery

There are so many ways we can recycle everyday things. This workshop teaches you simple techniques that can be used to transform possible rubbish into modern jewellery, just in time for Mother's Day.

On the Road Bike Repairs

Learn about the significance and heritage of the local area of Puckey's Estate and Bellambi Wetlands while taking a leisurely ride along the beach bike track. You'll also be taught how to do basic on-the-road maintenance on your bike.

Fabulous Fungi Workshop

Ever wondered what the slimy yellow blob that appeared in your garden overnight was? Then come along to this workshop where you'll learn about the interesting world of fungi. Participants will also learn about the different types of edible fungi and techniques on growing your own. 

Seasonal Garden - Preparing for winter and harvesting

Learn how to make simple dishes with ingredients straight from the backyard veggie patch. This will be an alfresco cooking and dining experience in the gardens. Learn about what types of vegetables can be grown during the winter, how to prepare your gardens, and simple tips so that you can harvest all year round.

Composting Workshop

Learn how to set up a compost heap in your own backyard and prevent 40 per cent of household waste going to landfill.

Bokashi Workshop

Learn all about this Japanese fermentation style of composting that allows you to easily recycle meat, fish, bread and dairy foods into compost.

Wormfarming

If you've ever considered getting a low-maintenance pet then why not consider worms? These wrigglers not only provide you with rich organic fertiliser for your garden, but they also eat up your food scraps and reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill. Come along to learn how to set up your own worm farm, and divert your organic waste from landfill, while providing a wonderful resource for your garden.

Children and Chickens

Come and learn about keeping chickens in your yard, their needs and behaviour. Meet some chickens and check out their eggs. Children are welcome. The evening ends with an egg hunt.

 Rediscovering Ancient Landscapes

 This legend-telling workshop lets us reconnect with our natural landscape through indigenous dreamtime stories and knowledge of life from past eras. This will include a member of the Aboriginal community coming to discuss their culture and heritage.

Sensory Inspiration in the Rainforest

Learn about rainforests, their structure and importance in the Illawarra. Discover how you can help in rainforest conservation, how you can get involved and how to find resources and information.

Ephemeral Sculptures in the Garden

Ephemeral sculpture is a fantastic way to express your creativity, and add a low-cost feature to your garden. Join us at the Botanic Gardens to learn how to create sculptures out of natural material. Morning tea will be provided.

Pumpkin Carving

Celebrate the westernised tradition of Halloween by coming along to a pumpkin carving workshop. Enjoy carving your pumpkin with a cup of homemade pumpkin soup, then wait until it gets dark and light up your masterpiece with a candle.

The Art of Creating your own Herbarium

Interested in botany and the wonderful world of plants? Then come along to learn how to create your own identification herbarium, where you can collect and preserve specimens for future reference.

Garden Lovers

A number of workshops held on the second Tuesday of the month where one of our friendly garden staff will share their knowledge of an area of interest in the garden.

Bush Medicine

This is a 1.5 hour workshop on traditional Aboriginal bush remedies. Learn to treat a range of ailments like arthritis and rheumatism using local plants

No Dig Gardening

Learn how to build your vegetable garden above the ground using organic ingredients. This method is great for conserving water and improving your garden soil, together with diverting your household waste from landfill.

Permaculture

We'll share with you how to create a stable, productive and sustainable system. Our permaculture courses are fun, interactive and full of interesting ideas to help you get the most out of your garden. 

Garden Culture

Garden Culture is a series of workshop on gardening, growing food and composting for refugee communities. It's full of knowledge, and sharing.
