Keira Street Transit Mall Now Open

The Keira Street Transit Mall opened to all traffic on Monday, 29 November, 2010.

The opening of the transit mall allows drivers to travel north and south through Keira Street, giving easier access to parking stations and making travel around the CBD quicker and more convenient.

Access to the northern suburbs will also be simpler as drivers will be able to travel straight through Keira Street. These new traffic conditions will ease congestion in the CBD and make key locations more accessible.

The opening of the Keira Street Transit Mall forms part of the City Centre Access and Movement Strategy which was adopted by Council in 2005.

New Bus Lanes and New Rules

Bus lanes will operate along Crown Strreet and Keira Street. Bus lanes are not general traffic lanes, so cars must not drive in them. The NSW road rules state a driver (except the driver of a public bus, taxi, motorbike or bicycle) must not drive in a bus lane. A car can drive in a bus lane under certain circumstances like emergencies or to avoid an obstruction. You may also travel in the bus lane to overtake a vehicle that is turning right.
