Community
Aboriginal services
Wollongong City Council provides a range of services both to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents, and to give the broader community a greater awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and culture.
Council’s Community Worker responsible for Aboriginal services acts as a link between Council and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The officer also plays a key role in:
- organising NAIDOC week and Reconciliation Week activities;
- conducting cultural awareness training;
- providing heritage and cultural information;
- representing Wollongong City Council on the organising committees for community events and festivals;
- providing advice, support, and information on protocols for liaising with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
