A community focused local authority of excellence

The Wollongong City Council area was created in 1947 when four local government areas - the Shire of Bulli, Shire of Central Illawarra, Municipality of Wollongong, and the Municipality of Northern Illawarra - amalgamated to form the City of Greater Wollongong, which today is simply known as the City of Wollongong.

Since the city’s incorporation in 1947, Wollongong City Council has grown into one of the largest local government authorities in Australia, employing more than 1,000 staff with an annual budget expenditure nearing $200 million.

Wollongong City Council’s vision is to be a community focused local authority of excellence, and we work hard to fulfil that goal. Our mission is to enhance our community's lifestyle and environment through effective leadership, community involvement and commitment to service.

Our corporate values state that in everything we do, we will always:

  • assess our community's needs and respond to them;
  • improve the quality of our services;
  • be an open and accessible organisation;
  • be fair and equitable;
  • act with honesty and integrity;
  • encourage teamwork and cooperation;
  • ask ourselves, 'What is best for Wollongong?'.
