Celebrating 60 years

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the city's amalgamation, Wollongong City Council planned a series of events.

Community celebration in the Mall - 8 September
This family-fun event was themed around the past 60 years. There was a great line-up of entertainment, vintage car displays and historical photographs, as well as rides, face painting and an animal farm that keep the children entertained for hours.

Business luncheon – 12 September @ Villa D'Oro Function Centre
Those who have shaped the city were honoured at this Lord Mayor business luncheon. Guests were be invited to reflect and reminisce about Wollongong's proud history through speakers and a presentation outlining the significance of the anniversary. Each guest received a complimentary copy of the commemorative book called 60 stories for 60 years

Commemorative book 60 stories for 60 years
To mark this significant event, a book called 60 stories for 60 years was produced.

All residents were invited to contribute their fond impressions and memories of living, working and playing in Wollongong during the past 60 years, whether it was attending the local surf carnivals, driving down Crown Street, arriving at the Fairy Meadow migrant hostel or eating ‘bangers and mash’ in the Coles cafeteria.

From the stories submitted, 60 stories will be selected for the commemorative book. Slight editorial changes were made at the discretion of Council officers for grammatical reasons. Winning entries received a limited copy of the book.
