Background

June 2010

As a result of the consultation conducted in March 2010, it was identified that Darcy Wentworth Park was not an appropriate site for the Southern Suburbs Skate Plaza. Agreement has now been reached with the Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA) on a parcel of land along Northcliffe Drive between Walker Street and Margaret Street, Warrawong.

April 2010

Darcy Wentowrth Park was identified as the preferred site for the Southern Suburbs Skate Plaza and in turn Council exhibited a site location concept plan from Saturday, 27 March - Friday, 16 April, 2010. A Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) sheet and a general feedback form were made available to the community on Council's website and at a community kiosk held on Saturday, 27 March, 2010.

2009

In 2009, Council engaged Convic Design a recognised skate industry facility design and construction company to review a number of locations to assess and recommend a preferred site/s for the Southern Suburbs Skate Plaza. The sites selected were:

  1. Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA) land on the corner of King and Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong
  2. Darcy Wentworth Park, Warrawong
  3. King George V, Port Kembla
  4. Fred Finch Park, Berkeley

2006

To address ongoing community requests for skate park development throughout the city a Skate Park Strategy was developed and endorsed by Council in 2006. The following precinct locations were identified for future development:

  • Southern Suburbs
  • Wollongong
  • Northern Suburbs
