Have a question about your application, our process or what happens next?
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about applying for a job with us.

Our Process

Q. What is the standard recruitment process?
A. We will send you a confirmation email when we receive your application. Following the closing date, the panel will review all applications, taking into consideration your resume, responses to the selection criteria and experience, qualifications and/or licences.  We may then invite you to attend a panel interview or participate in other types assessments that will enable you to demonstrate you are the most meritorious applicant for the position.


Q. Where can I get more information about a vacancy?
A. On our ‘Vacancies’ page an information pack will be linked to the positon. The information pack includes the full advertisement, selection criteria, job description and the contact person. After reading the information pack if you have any further enquiries please contact this person.

Timeframes and feedback

Q. How long will the recruitment process take?
A. Generally the process should take 4 weeks from the closing date.  We endeavour to complete it as quickly as possible.  We will inform you of your progress as much as possible.

Q. How long after submitting my application will I hear from Wollongong City Council?
A. We aim to respond to all applicants as quickly as possible.  You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your application.  Following the closing date the panel will review all applications and advise if you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Submitting your application

Q. How do I apply for a position?
A. All applicants must submit their application online.

Q. Do I need to include evidence of my qualifications, certificates and licenses?
A. If these are required as listed in the selection criteria for the position, then you should submit copies as part of your written job application to demonstrate you meet that criterion. If you are selected for an interview, you must bring original documents to the interview for verification by the Panel.

Q. I can’t find a position that I am interested in at the moment. Can I send you my resume?
A. If you can’t find a job that you are interested in at the moment, we recommend setting up a job alert. When an opportunities arises that suits your skills you will receive an email notifying you. You can set up this job alert when you log into your profile.

Q. I am having trouble uploading my application. What do I do?
A. Please send us an email at and a member of the Recruitment Team will assist you.

Q. I would no longer like my application considered and wish to withdraw.  How do I do this?
A. On your profile you can withdraw your application at any time. You will receive an email confirming that your application has been withdrawn.

Q. If I withdraw my application will it go against me in the future?
A. Should you wish to withdraw your application it will not affect any future applications you may submit with us.

Interviews and Assessment Centres

Q. I have been invited to attend an interview. What should I wear?
A. It is recommended that you wear smart attire for any interview. If another dress code is required for example to participate in a practical assessment, the Hiring Manager will let you know.

Q. Is there parking available?
A. Most interviews and/or assessments are conducted at Council’s Administration Building, Burelli Street Wollongong. There is a paid ticketed parking (2 hour limit) available in the parking station at the rear of the Council building. Entry is from Stewart Street.
At times interviews/assessments may be conducted at another location. The Hiring Manager will advise the location and if there are any parking limitations.  You will also receive an email confirming the details of the interview.

Q. How many people will be interviewing me?
A. There will be at least 3 people on the panel – the Hiring Manager and two other members. 

Q. What if I require specific support during the interview?
A. Wollongong City Council would like to ensure that your interview is conducted in a safe and equitable environment. If you have any specific needs or requirements please advise the Hiring Manager prior to the interview so we may arrange these services.

Q. If I am running late or cannot attend an interview who do I notify and how?
A. Call or email the Hiring Manager who you have been dealing with.  If you are having difficulties please contact the Recruitment Team on 4227 7111.

Background checks

​Q. Who should I provide as referees?
A. We request that you provide the contact details of at least two professional referees. It is preferable that the referee details are at a manager/supervisor level and at least one is a current manager/supervisor. The referee checks are only completed after the interview and/or assessment. If we require additional background checks, we will contact you to obtain your consent and advise you of the details.
