Works by teachers from the Arts and Media Section of TAFE Illawarra’s West Wollongong Campus will be on display until 13 November 2011.

Every year a substantial number of art students enrol, participate in and graduate from visual arts and design courses at the Arts and Media Section of the Illawarra Institute West Wollongong TAFE. These students whether younger or older members of the community emerge from TAFE often changed because of the experience. Many become active members of the vigorous local art and cultural community able to translate knowledge and skills they developed and honed at TAFE into developing their own art and professional practices.

The visual arts teaching staff at the West Wollongong campus include a varied group of practicing artists working across a variety of media and disciplines who provide students, through a strong studio practice focus, opportunities to develop a range of skills and engage with diverse ideas and the most current thoughts in contemporary art practice. As artists, many of the teachers participating in this exhibition have well established art practices regularly exhibiting both locally and further afield.

37 is the latest of several exhibitions hosted by the Gallery over many years that have showcased the current work of teachers from the Arts and Media Section Illawarra Institute West Wollongong TAFE. The exhibition provides an opportunity for teachers to present their work not only to students but to a wider audience and demonstrate the breadth of work and experience which they bring to their roles as artists and teachers.

The exhibition title 37 refers to the number of visual arts teachers both at the TAFE and exhibiting in the show. The exhibition includes work across a range of media reflecting both the diversity of the teaching staff and their art practices.
