Do you want to know more about frogs of the Illawarra? Do you want to learn how to create a frog friendly garden? Have the recent heavy rains brought new frogs to you garden?
Wollongong City Council – in conjunction with Shellharbour and Kiama Councils – has prepared a Frogs of the Illawarra brochure to help community members identify frogs and create better environments for them to survive.
Vanni De Luca, Manager Environmental Strategy and Planning, said the brochure was in response to growing community interest in frogs and creating frog friendly gardens.
“We have worked collaboratively to prepare this brochure,” Mr De Luca said. “You have probably heard of Green and Golden Bell Frogs, but did you know that we have a Giant Burrowing Frog in the Illawarra, or a Bleating Tree Frog in the Illawarra?”
The brochure helps citizens identify the different species of frogs from the Illawarra, and gives advice on how you can create your own frog habitat.
The brochure is part of the Illawarra Biodiversity Strategy which has recently been adopted by the three Illawarra Councils. The production of the guide helps to fulfil the commitment to ‘Action 82’ of the Illawarra Biodiversity Strategy to develop resources to improve access to biodiversity resources and information on how to improve backyard biodiversity.
The Frogs of the Illawarra brochure was created as part of the Illawarra Biodiversity and Local Food Strategy for Climate Change project, a joint sustainability initiative lead by Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama Councils, working in partnership with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust.
Citizens can pick up a copy of the guide at Wollongong City Council or Shellharbour City Council Administration Buildings.
The Guide to Frogs of the Illawarra can also be downloaded from the web.
