Wollongong City Council’s Green Team will conduct composting displays and provide advice throughout the city during International Composting Week.

Council will conduct the displays to help all citizens reduce the amount of household organic waste going to landfill.

More than half of household garbage going to landfill is made up of organic and garden waste. Most of this green waste can be composted, said Vanni De Luca, Manager Environmental Strategy and Planning.

“Composting has been used in crop production for centuries and it can also be used on household gardens or vegetable gardens,” Mr De Luca said. “This will help to reduce the amount of organic waste going to land fill. As organic waste decomposes in landfill it produces the greenhouse gases, methane and carbon dioxide. These greenhouse gases contribute to worldwide climate change.”

You can find out how to turn food scraps and garden waste into healthy soil and fertiliser. There will also be the opportunity to win prizes during the displays, including a compost bin, compost twirler and 100 trailer loads of compost from Soil Co.

The displays and free advice will be held at:

Sunday 1 May - Dapto Markets at Dapto Showground

Thursday 5 May – Bunnings Store, Wollongong

Friday 6 May - Wollongong Mall market day

Saturday 7 May - German Club Farmers and Craft Market

If you’d like to book a compost, worm farm or chook care workshop, please contact the Green Team on 42277262 or GT@wollongong.nsw.gov.au
