Wollongong City Council has accepted a tender from Affective Services Australia to refurbish the Coledale rock pool.

Council accepted the tender valued at $350,000 at its meeting of 27 April.

Administrator Dr Colin Gellatly AO said the Council had conducted a review of its rock pools in March 2010.

“Council found that the Coledale rock pool was in poor condition with a number of structural defects throughout the pool structure.

“Council recognises that these rock pools provide good leisure activities for all members of the community, from young surf life savers to seniors who swim regularly,” Dr Gellatly said. “The proposed works on the rock pool will include complete replacement of the rock pool floor, repair to cracked and damaged walls, new stairs and other associated works.

“Council has consulted with the local Coledale community and they support Council’s refurbishment of the pool.”

Work on the rock pool is expected to started later this year.

The rock pool was originally constructed by volunteer labour in 1915.
