All community transport in Wollongong and Shellharbour will be provided by a new consortium called Community Transport – Wollongong Shellharbour from Tuesday, 4 January 2011.

The new organisation is a venture between Wollongong City Council and Shellharbour City Council, who were jointly awarded a State Government tender to deliver community transport to people who can’t access public transport because of physical, social or geographical constraints.

Wollongong’s Community, Cultural and Library Services Manager, Jenny Thompson, said the consortium had been able to work together to take on Wollongong and Shellharbour’s individual and group transport needs ahead of schedule.

“I am really happy with the progress that has been made by both partners. We have had to bring the services of three different organisations together and take on around 1000 extra clients, so it has been a challenging task,” Jenny Thompson said.

“We have managed to come together and as one provider we are ready to take on the full responsibility for delivery of community transport from the beginning of 2011.”

All community transport clients, including those who were previously provided with services through other organisations will now be offered a wide range of individual and group services through Community Transport – Wollongong Shellharbour.

To ensure that clients are provided with a high level of service, we have established a common point of contact for clients across Wollongong and Shellharbour Local Government Areas. To contact Community Transport – Wollongong Shellharbour, call 1300 987 422.

This service is provided by a dedicated group of volunteers. If anyone is interested in volunteering for this service, you’re encouraged to contact us.
