Wollongong City Council will hold a competition for school children on the life cycle of their television or computer, with $1,000 in prizes on offer.

Council’s Environmental Strategy and Planning Manager Vanni De Luca said the competition for infants and primary school children is to raise awareness of the life cycle of these technologies and what happens to them after they go into the waste stream.

“This is a community education program to help reduce the number of old televisions and computers that are going to land fill,” Mr De Luca said. “Through the competition we are inviting all infants and primary departments in Wollongong city schools to have their students show their talents, knowledge and creativity to enter a challenging competition with the chance to win some great prizes.”

There are two categories in the competition to cater for infant and primary students.   The infant students are invited to submit a colouring in competition and primary students are asked to design a poster showing the life cycle of their television or computer. The competition focuses on the need to recycle e-waste and to also gain an understanding about the resources involved in producing these items including the manufacturing of them through to the point of sale.

Prizes to be won include a visit to a winning school by Ziggy and His Incredible Time Machine and $200 towards a waste wise project and other prizes.

All entries should be submitted to Council’s Environmental Strategy and Planning Division on Level 3, 41 Burelli Street, Wollongong, by 5pm on Friday 23 September 2011. You can also email your art work.

You can call Council’s Waste Promotion Coordinator on (02) 4227 7105 or email to find out more about the competition and how your school can get involved.
