Wollongong City Council is starting work on the next planned stage of the Whytes Gully Waste Landfill at Kembla Grange that will allow the site to meet the needs of the community over the next 50 years.
The Whytes Gully Waste Depot, built in 1983, was designed as a three stage facility. The first stage operated until 1993 and the second stage is now reaching the end of its lifespan.
Council is now planning for the third and final stage of the landfill site, which is expected to keep the facility up and running up until 2060. Council has started the development of a new masterplan for the site, the design of the stage 3 emplacement area and planning for infrastructure upgrades to improve operations and environmental management.
The new masterplan of the site will ensure Council can meet the long term waste management needs and embrace emerging technologies in sustainable waste management.
“The project team is looking to the community for ideas on how we can ensure the next stage of the landfill is designed and constructed so that it minimises impacts on neighbours and costs to the whole community,” said Kathleen Packer, Council’s Waste Services Manager.
