At an Extraordinary Meeting of Council today, Wollongong City Council approved two tenders for upgrades to community infrastructure. One is for the refurbishment of Sandon Point Surf Life Saving Club, and the other for construction of a vehicle storage building for Wollongong State Emergency Services (SES).

Wollongong City Council Administrator Col Gellatly AO said that it was great to see this investment of funds into supporting two volunteer organisations that look after the people of Wollongong.

“The $2.4 million refurbishment of Sandon Point Surf Lifesaving Club will deliver a huge benefit to the Club and the local community. It is anticipated that work will start at the end of April.”

“Council has worked closely with the surf club and external consultants to ensure that the new design meets the requirements of the club and is sensitive to the ecological and archaeological needs of the site.”

The scope of works includes replacing concrete slabs affected by concrete cancer, building improved storage facilities for the club, new public amenities, expanding the club training room and toilets, providing improved disabled access to the club and ramp access to the beach for lifesaving vehicles.

Council has also approved a tender for the construction of a new vehicle storage building for the SES on the corner of Masters Road and Drummond Street, Wollongong.

“This new vehicle storage building is the first stage of a longer term program to establish a new local SES headquarters facility in this more accessible location,” said Administrator Gellatly.

The funding for this project includes a grant under the Australian Government Jobs Fund.
