Wollongong City Council’s annual Australia Day celebrations will set the city alight with a family-friendly alcohol-free event on Wednesday, 26 January 2011, from 8am.
The action will kick off with the traditional Illawarra Aquathon and include many activities such as rides, great entertainment, children’s stage, local bands and finish with the spectacular Integral Energy Fireworks display at 9pm.
Try running on water with the new Oz Ball, a huge PVC bubble in Belmore Basin that you can climb inside, build a sandcastle or throw a thong.
Council’s General Manager (Acting), Peter Kofod said there will be something for everyone to enjoy, both the old favourites and some new exciting entertainment and activities.
“We have a kite workshop, where you can design and fly your own kite on Flagstaff Hill, or bring your own along and gain some tips and tricks from the experts,” said Mr Kofod.
“This year we’ll also be holding the inaugural 26ers club for those born on 26 January. There’ll be a special cake, gift bags from Horizon Credit Union, and fun activities for the 26ers, so don’t miss this great opportunity to celebrate your special day with the Wollongong community.”
“Council will be working closely with Police to ensure that everyone can enjoy the day with friends and family in a safe, alcohol-free environment,” Mr Kofod said.
“Council would like to welcome this year’s Australia Day Ambassador Dr Alvin Quah from Masterchef and thank him for taking part in the celebration.”
There will be temporary traffic changes on Australia Day. Council encourages locals to use the ‘Park and Ride’ by parking at JJ Kelly Park and travelling in the bus, which will go to the Harbour every 15 minutes from 12noon till 11pm. More information about road closures and transport can be found on Council’s website.
