Wollongong City Council has employed eleven new cadets as part of Council’s annual intake of cadets and apprentices.
This year’s cadets come from a variety of fields including civil engineering, civil construction, horticulture, information management, building surveying and environmental health.
Cadets will be rotated through a number of roles across the divisions of Council including city works, governance and information, environmental strategy and planning, regulation and enforcement, infrastructure and city planning.
Council’s General Manager, David Farmer, said that the Cadet Program is an important initiative as it provides employment and on the job training for young people in the region.
“Cadets will work on a part time basis at the Council while they undertake tertiary studies for between one to seven years,” said Mr Farmer.
“Council’s cadet program has been in place for over 20 years with many former cadets becoming key figures in our city. The cadet program is one way Council can address the issue of skills shortages in the region.”
“This year’s cadets made it through a competitive selection process and have earned their position at Council. They all have the potential to make a valuable contribution to the community and Council in future years,” added Mr Farmer.
