Wollongong City Council has engaged an environmental consultant to manage the design and construction of a new landfill cell at Whytes Gully, Kembla Grange.
Council is working with Golder Associates to prepare an environmental assessment on the proposal to construct a new cell at the Whytes Gully landfill site. A new cell is a large area specifically constructed to take a large amount of waste in Council’s waste depot.
Acting Director of Infrastructure and Works John Shepherd said the existing landfill cells at Whytes Gully will be full in the next two to three years, based on current waste levels.
“Council needs to plan now for a new cell that will be prepared for more waste after the current cells become full,” Mr Shepherd said. “So the design and approval of a new cell is an important priority. The lifespan of both the existing and new landfill cells will depend on the amount of waste generated by the community.”
The approvals process will involve detailed environmental impact assessment and extensive community consultation. Final approval will be required from the Department of Planning and Infrastructure prior to Council being able to construct the new landfill cell.
Golder Associates has been engaged by Council to facilitate the environmental impact assessment and community consultation. The project team will be working to design and construct a new landfill cell while minimising impacts on the community, improving amenity for users and minimising the costs to the whole community.
“There will be several opportunities for community members to have their say in the new landfill cell project,” Mr Shepherd said.
