Wollongong City’s new councillors will take their place on a range of boards and committees and assist and support decisions in areas like tourism and sport, following the 10 October Council meeting.
Councillors were elected to organisations such as the Tourism Wollongong Board, Illawarra Sports Stadium Committee and the Southern Councils Group.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said the community would now be represented across a wide range of areas within the City.
“It is important to have community representation where decisions are being made,” Cr Bradbery said. “The election of Councillors to these committees and boards means the community through their Councillors continues to have a voice in key areas from sport through to tourism.
“Council is not just about a meeting on Monday night once or twice a month, it involves hours of planning and Consultation.”
Two Council committees – the Corporate Governance Committee and Audit Committee – will have Councillor representation. Both of these committees will comprise five members, including two Councillors and three Independent members.
They will meet quarterly and serve as independent body to assist Council in supporting management to comply with relevant laws and standards. Other committees include the Australia Day committee.
Cr Bradbery will represent the city at the Southern Councils Group, the peak organisation for local government in the Illawarra and South Coast. Council will work with other regional councils including Bega Valley Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, Kiama Municipal, Shellharbour City, Shoalhaven City, and Wingecarribee Shire.
