Wollongong City Council will begin works on the renewal of one of the oldest streets in the city – Market Street – on Sunday 15 May.

Work is expected to take two weeks with Council and contractors working to replace the entire section of Market Street. The first part of the project will begin in Market and Church St, surrounding St Michael’s church and the Ibis Hotel.

Director Infrastructure and Works Peter Kofod said Council has budgeted about $800,000 to complete the work on the road.

“Council has been liaising with businesses and citizens in the area to ensure they are inconvenienced as little as possible during the road works,” Mr Kofod said.

“The works are essential as the road’s sub base is deteriorating. We are planning to complete the work as quickly as we can and given good weather we should be able to complete the project on time.

“If you need to access businesses in the area, please follow the directions of traffic controllers on site and be patient,” Mr Kofod said.

Partial access to Market Street will be maintained for the majority of the project.

This roadwork is part of Council’s commitment to improve and maintain the City’s assets.
