Wollongong City Council will consider the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan at its meeting on Monday 13 February.

Council’s report recommends that the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan be placed on public exhibition and four community workshops be held to gain community feedback on the plan which addresses the risks associated with coastal processes, climate change, and sea level rise.

During 2010-2011 Council conducted extensive consultation with owners of more than 2,680 properties in the city that might be affected by coastal hazards such as coastal erosion and recession, ocean or tidal inundation or geotechnical instability.

Council’s Director Planning and Environment Andrew Carfield said the second stage of the draft coastal plan outlines the risks using a risk assessment process, which is based on the likelihood and consequences of the hazards.

“The second stage of the draft coastal plan aims to assess these risks and then outline any mitigating controls that Council already has in place and also identify how we can better prepare for changes to sea level in our coastal areas,” Mr Carfield said.
“Council will consider placing the draft plan on public exhibition. Council is providing the draft plan on its web site and hard copies will be available for viewing in our libraries and I encourage all community members to view the maps and draft plan.”

The draft coastal Zone Management Plan and the associated maps are available on Council’s internet site.
