Wollongong City Council will exhibit a draft Vision for Brickyard Point, Austinmer, site of the Headlands Hotel.

The draft Vision will be on exhibition for six weeks and Council is encouraging the community to review and provide feedback on the draft Vision.

The draft Vision will help inform the site-specific Development Control Plan chapter for the Hotel site and this will become part of the Wollongong Development Control Plan 2009. The draft Vision includes a detailed site analysis and explores built form options for the site for community and stakeholder consideration and comment.

Council Administrator Robert McGregor AM said the draft Vision will give all people interested in the historic site a chance to create a shared vision of what the site could offer.

“The Headlands Hotel is an iconic site on the northern beaches of Wollongong specifically zoned for tourism. It has a number of constraints and it is the only privately owned headland on the northern beaches of Wollongong,” Mr McGregor said.

“Council recognises that the Land and Environment Court has approved the demolition of the existing hotel and construction of a spa resort and serviced apartments. The Court has also refused the subdivision of this site for bed and breakfast developments.

“We see the Headlands Hotel site as a unique and spectacular location in the city and the successful redevelopment of this site will need to build on its key tourism location and promote public access to the headland.”

The draft Vision for Brickyard Point will be on public exhibition from 4 July 2011 for six weeks. Community members can visit Wollongong City Council’s website at www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au to view the draft Vision material or call the Customer Service Centre on (02) 4227 7111.
