Wollongong Council continued its ongoing work in preparing for future flood events tonight by approving the tender for a Wollongong City Flood Study.

Wollongong City Council Administrator, Col Gellatly AO said that this report will provide Council with the up-to-date information on potential impacts of flooding on the city centre and the suburbs of Coniston and Mangerton.

“It has been some time since a comprehensive study of flood impacts on the area has been undertaken.”

“This study will look at historical flooding in the area as well as providing information on potential flood levels taking into consideration the increased development and climate change.”

“The study is important for future planning for growth in the City Centre,” Administrator Gellatly added.

The preparation of the Wollongong City Flood Strategy is the first step in defining to potential extent of flooding within the city catchment.

Strategies to reduce flood risks and manage future development within the catchment will follow the completion of this flood study.
