Wollongong City Council has completed work today on the former Dwyers site, transforming it into a neat and tidy 150 space car park.
The transformation took only six weeks to complete after Council Administrators announced the decision to utilise the site following the Council meeting on 23 November last year.
Director Infrastructure and Works (Acting), Peter Coyte said he was pleased to see the new car park open ahead of schedule and in time for the upcoming weekend.
“We are happy to provide the new car park in time for the Hawks home game at WIN Entertainment Centre tonight,” said Mr Coyte.
“Hawks fans can park at the new space tonight at no cost. The car park is free after 4.30pm weekdays and free all weekend.”
“The car park has 138 spaces for cars, eight motor bike spaces and four disabled parking spaces,” explained Mr Coyte.
“The opening of the former Dwyers site is part of the continued work by Council to expand sites we already own, such as the Keira Street car park, located on the corner of Ellen and Keira Street, which will open to the public this coming Monday, along with the MacCabe car park which is increasing to a 4 hour car park from Monday, 31 January.”
“While the Dwyers site is temporary, along with the Oxford Tavern site which opened on Friday, 3 December 2010, we’re confident they should be here for some time. The sites have a two year lease and will be open seven days a week,” said Mr Coyte.
Council would like to remind the community that all of Council’s metered parking spaces (on-street and car parks) are free on weekends and public holidays. Meters operate from 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
All of Council's permanent leased car parks are free to the general public on weekends and before 9am and after 5pm, Monday to Friday.
While parking is free on Saturdays in the city centre, drivers must still abide by the time restrictions noted on street signs or they may be issued with an infringement notice.
