Wollongong City Council has awarded a contract for the development of a new baseball sports field at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley.

The works will include the installation and construction of a baseball diamond and back net, dugout and bull pen, and minor regrading and new turf for the site. The cost of these new onsite improvements is $380,000.

Director of Infrastructure and Works Peter Kofod said that the works were anticipated to be completed in June 2011.

“The new baseball diamond at Fred Finch Park will improve our sporting facilities, and allow us to host regional and national baseball events at Berkeley,” said Mr Kofod.

“Baseball’s Little League program has been growing in popularity in recent years, and new infrastructure such as this sports field will provide opportunities for this growth to be accommodated in the future. Council is pleased to provide this new sports field which will be well used by local and visiting teams.”

Temporary perimeter fencing has been erected at the site and the contractor, M Collins and Sons Pty Ltd, is expected to commence work on 27 April.
