On Friday, 25 March new gates at the entrance to the Wollongong Botanic Garden will be officially opened to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden.

Wollongong City Council’s Director of Planning and Environment, Andrew Carfield said that the Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden have spent the last 30 years supporting the Garden through a range of activities including monthly guided walks, fundraising, and other promotional activities.

“Over the years the Friends have raised money for trees, garden seats, the Equatorial sundial in the Rose Garden, the Haworthia Cacti Collection, Gravograph engraving machine, contributed to the construction of the rainforest amphitheatre and now, with the help of local suppliers Orrcon Steel and Kenwall’s Fencing, purchased the ‘Friends Gates’.”

“The gates are located on Madoline Street, Keiraville, and are a celebration of the work the Friends have done over the last 30 years.”

Meetings of the Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden are held at the Garden’s Discovery Centre (entrance via Madoline Street) at 10.00am on the second Saturday of February, April, June, August, October and December.

The Botanic Gardens are open from 7am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 6.45pm on weekends during Daylight saving and from 7am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 5pm on weekends for the remainder of the year.
