Wollongong Art Gallery will hold an event solely for school students on Thursday 2 June.

Generationext is a youth initiative of the Museum of Contemporary Art and encourages students aged from 12 to 18 years to connect at the Art Gallery for a free event solely for teenagers.

John Monteleone, Program Director at Wollongong City Gallery, said the event is designed to encourage students into the gallery to explore the latest exhibition as well as to let them take part in an event where there are no teachers or parents.

“Generationext is an exciting concept where we will have a circus performer, Shona Conacher, as well as two local bands, Tommy M and the Mastersounds and My Little Underground, performing,” Mr Monteleone said.

“There will also be free food, a graffiti wall and art competitions. We will also encourage the students to explore the latest exhibition, Almanac: The Gift of Ann Lewis AO.

“We have found that many students at this age do love contemporary art and the gallery and they need time to enjoy this with their friends and fellow students.”

Generationext will be supervised by the Wollongong City Gallery staff, designed with input from the Wollongong Youth Centre and is drug and alcohol free.

RSVP is essential by Friday 27 May to (02) 9241 7196 or generationext@mca.com.au. You can also visit the generationext Facebook page at www.facebook.com/generationextsydney.
