Wollongong City Council will begin stabilisation works at Waniora point on 9 May 2011.

The works are planned during the winter months and will take about four week to complete.

Acting Planning and Environment Director Mark Riordan said it was essential that stabilisation occurs at the headland as the site is important as a known Aboriginal heritage site.

“The headland works also are needed to stabilise a Norfolk Island pine tree, and maintain the headland as a site for passive recreation,” Mr Riordan said.

“The works will involve placing Gabion baskets into the slope, backfilling with soil and planting low level indigenous plants and shrubs on the site.”

Council has received an Aboriginal Heritage Impact permit to allow the works to be completed and there will be ongoing community consultation as the works take place.

Funding for the project is provided by Council and the Federal Government under the Caring for Country program. The works will cost about $80,000 and may require temporary closure of certain areas on the headland and parts of the beach.
