Household Clean Up Trial, 1814 Collections so Far…
Wollongong City Council is two months into trailing a new approach to the annual household clean up service, giving residents the opportunity to ring and book a kerbside rubbish pick-up at a time that’s convenient to them.
The popularity of the new service has seen Council’s Customer Service team take a total of 2,367 phone calls relating to kerbside collection. A total of 1814 kerbside collections have been booked.
Director of Infrastructure and Works, Peter Kofod said Council will make a decision on whether the new system will be adopted at the completion of the trial later this year.
“The new service offers each resident household one booking per year, allowing up to two cubic metres of household rubbish to be placed out for collection (2 metres in length, 1 metre in width and 1 metre in height). This is double the volume allowed in the former service,” explained Mr Kofod.
“Residents can now place more types of items and bulkier items on the kerbside for collection, including mattresses, computers, televisions, tyres, furniture, clothing and other electrical items. The new service has seen 848 mattresses collected so far.”
“The bulky items are then manually sorted, which has also led to an increase in the amount of material recovered for reuse and recycling,” said Mr Kofod.
“We encourage all residents to make use of the new system and make their booking for a kerbside rubbish collection now. If you live in a unit complex you need to contact your body corporate; 85 unit blocks have so far had collection pick ups,” added Mr Kofod.
The trial of the new service began on 1 December 2010, Council encourages residents to provide feedback about the new system by ringing us on 4227 7111, writing to us, or by filling out a survey on Council’s website www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au.
