Media opportunity: At 10am on Thursday, 17 March 2011 Nell John will be having her 100th birthday party at Corrimal Community Centre, 15 Short Street, Corrimal.  Media are invited to attend.

Wollongong local, Nell John, will be celebrating her 100th birthday this Thursday, 17 March with her friends from Corrimal Day Care.

Wollongong City Council’s Manager Community, Cultural and Library Services, Jenny Thompson says that Day Care Services give people like Mrs John the chance to remain active within the community and maintain important social relationships with their peers.

“Many of the people who attend day care services are socially isolated. We have a pick up and drop off service to get people from home to the day care session and back. Every week we offer a different activity, entertainment or outing and there is a real sense of camaraderie between our participants.”

“Mrs John has attended Corrimal Day Care every Thursday for the last three years. She has made a number of good friends and enjoys catching up with them each week.”

The service is staffed by a Council staff member and 9 volunteers who provide transport, morning tea and lunch.

A $10 weekly donation is asked for to help cover the costs of the program.

The day care service is a Home and Community Care funded program through the NSW and Federal Governments and delivered by Wollongong City Council. Council also offers day care services in Thirroul, Fairy Meadow, Berkley and Windang.

“If you’d like to volunteer to help run the service, or if you know someone who might enjoy taking part in the program contact us on 4227 7381,” added Ms Thompson.
