Wollongong City Council will launch the Rise and Shine Campaign during World Environment Day on Thursday 1 September.
Council has been coordinating the Rise and Shine Campaign for 25 years and the campaign is helping to raise the awareness of the green environment of the Illawarra.
On 1 September Council will hold a number of workshops and displays for local school children at the Botanic Garden to celebrate World Environment Day and the launch of the annual Rise and Shine Sustainability Campaign.
Council’s Environmental Education Coordinator Mike McKeon said the workshops in the Botanic Garden include Building an Egg Carton Garden or Chickens are Magicians.
“The school children will be treated to a number of workshops were they will learn about reusing, recycling and helping to live a sustaining life in their household,” Mr McKeon said. “It’s a fun day and offers plenty of educational opportunities for schools.”
Council’s Rise and Shine Campaign has grown stronger and is changing the image of Wollongong from an industrial city to a city others envy for our quality of life and natural beauty.
“The Rise and Shine Sustainability Campaign had made a significant contribution towards changing our city,” Mr McKeon said. “More than 20,000 households have participated in the program so far. As a result, Wollongong now has more trees, cleaner water and air.
On 1 September primary school students from a number of Wollongong schools will learn of different ways they can help their city and plan for a greener future through a series of hands on environmental workshops.
“Rise and Shine and World Environment Day environmental programs are important places for Council to raise awareness while providing an opportunity for young citizens to get involved in the green objectives for the city,” Mr McKeon said.
