Today I received the news that Wollongong and Shellharbour Councils are proposed to merge.
As Lord Mayor of this city, like all Councillors and Councils, we are answerable to the State Government. Basically, councils are corporations of the State Government so I have no alternative but to find ways to address this situation to the advantage of our residents. I will convene a briefing of Councillors early in the new year and then hopefully bring to a Council meeting our response to the Minister for Local Government’s proposed amalgamation with Shellharbour City Council.
In the meantime, Wollongong City Council will continue to deliver for our ratepayers and residents. Our services and capital works programs will continue as per our plans. This Council has worked hard over the past four years to put our finances on a sustainable footing and we were deemed ‘Fit for the Future’. Your Council has worked hard to ‘tick the boxes’ and has achieved much.
We are faced with more challenges now but we will try our best as a Council to find ways to work with the Government to get as many positives out of this as we can for our City.
