Kiama Municipal Council, Shellharbour City Council and Wollongong City Council today launched the fully updated and revised third edition of the ‘Low Cost and Free Meals Directory’.

The Directory was launched as part of an event celebrating five years of working together on food security with local alliance Food Fairness Illawarra.

The Directory includes details of 62 organisations offering free or low cost meals across Kiama, Shellharbour and Wollongong.

Mayor of Kiama Municipal Council, Sandra McCarthy said that the publication, which was first produced in 2007, has proven enormously successful with thousands of copies distributed throughout the community.

“The Illawarra Councils are committed to ensuring access to food for everyone in our community and to this end, have partnered with the help of a NSW Environmental Trust grant to produce this guide which supports local food security,” Mayor McCarthy said.

“The directory provides good, up-to-date information for people in need, for those who wish to donate time or excess food and for those who’d like to volunteer.”

“The initiative also aims to ensure less good food is wasted.  Last year this project saved an estimated 32 tonnes of food material from landfill.” Mayor McCarthy added.

The new edition includes an increased number of entries for Kiama and Shellharbour, along with public transport information to assist people in getting to the organisations providing low cost and free meals.

Copies of the directory will be available in the Council foyers, libraries and as a PDF on our website www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au
