Microchip your pets day

Wollongong City Council will hold a day where you can have your household pet microchipped at a special discount rate.

Council will hold the microchipping day on Saturday 8 October from 10am to 2pm at the RSPCA Animal Shelter, Industrial Road, Unanderra. It will cost $10 to microchip each pet.

You will also receive a free dog tag and doggy poo pouch, as well as pet ownership information.  Council staff will also be available to assist with completing animal registrations.

Director Planning and Environment Andrew Carfield said pets are important in many people’s lives and provide owners with great benefits, but owning a pet brings certain responsibilities.

“It’s important for owners to take care of their pets and act responsibly by microchipping them. Council’s animal shelter last year housed 1189 dogs and 1060 cats mostly found wandering the streets. Microchipping is the best way you can ensure you are reunited if you lose your pet,” Mr Carfield said.

“Council’s discounted microchipping day offers owners a great opportunity to give their pet a special gift, one which could potentially save their life because the microchip lets authorities know who the pet belong to.

“As well as microchipping your pet, if you move home, your pet passes away or is given to another owner we encourage you to notify Council so our registration details can be amended,” Mr Carfield said.

All pet owners must keep their dog on a leash and cat in a cage during the
Microchipping day. Please bring identification as this offer only applies to ratepayers of Wollongong City.
