Wollongong City Council’s Wollongong Youth Action Team (WYAT) is planning to host a fortnightly social volleyball event on Thursdays starting today 12 May from 4pm - 5.30pm in MacCabe Park adjacent to the Youth Centre.
The Wollongong Youth Action Team, developed earlier this year, is a new initiative that brings together young people to hear what the young people of the city are saying and provide opportunities to address these issues.
Council’s Coordinator of Youth Services Toby Schaefer-Darling said we are continually looking at ways to improve the Wollongong Youth Centre.
“The social volleyball competition idea was born from success of the Youth Fest event held during Youth Week which saw a diverse range of young people coming together to play volleyball,” said Mr Schaefer-Darling.
“The event is designed to be fun with no experience or skill level required and will allow participants to meet new people and be a bit active.
“One of our aims of the fortnightly social competition is for young people to demonstrate a positive use of public space and hopefully reduce anti social behaviour.”
The event for people aged 12 - 24 years will lead into the On Stage event which is held every Thursday night at the Youth Centre, featuring live local performers 6pm - 7.30pm.
