Parking Meter Changes Take Effect Monday, 13 September 2010
The changes below commence the beginning of business Monday 13 September
- Pro-rata charging system for metered on and off street parking
- The hours of operation of paid on street parking Monday - Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm
- Free on street parking on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays but time limits apply on Saturday between 8:30am 12:30pm
- All Council operated off street car parks be free and without time restrictions on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays
- Increase the number of free 15 minutes spaces from 32 to 72 spaces;
- Change 8 current 1/2 hour spaces to 1 hour
- Change 137 current 1 hour spaces to 2 hours
- Change 23 spaces on Church Street between bank and Ellen Streets to unrestricted
- Investigate the provision of additional all day off street parking opportunities in the CBD
- Exhibit a proposal for a 10 hour [10P] zone at a flat fee of 30c per 1/2 hour; and
- Council trial free motorcycle parking in the Pay and Display parking zones.
The Pay and Display ticket machines are part of a long term strategy to free up the best located car spaces for people visiting town to shop and do business while encouraging all day parkers to consider alternatives, such as cycling, public transport or carpooling.
Net costs collected will be kept in a reserve and spent on new off street parking spaces and improvements to footpaths, cycleways and public transport facilities in the city centre.
Council has also installed free 15 minute parking spaces in front of high turnover areas, extra ‘No Parking' zones where motorists can stop for 2 minutes to pick up and drop off passengers, as well as free motorcycle spots.

Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) - Parking Concessions
The parking concessions available to MPS card holders are allowed only when the MPS card is displayed on the vehicle and the vehicle is being used to transport the card holder, or in the case of an organisation, when the vehicle is being used to carry an eligible person.
How long can I park? The concessions for time limited parking are as follows:
Ordinary parking signs - where parking is limited to:

more than 30 minutes, the vehicle can park for an unlimited time
-
30 minutes, the vehicle can park for two hours
-
less than 30 minutes, the vehicle can park for a maximum of 30 minutes.
Signs showing the symbol for people with disabilities - parking spaces and signs that show the symbol for people with disabilities have the effect of a ‘No Parking’ sign, except for vehicles displaying MPS cards.
No parking - a vehicle displaying an MPS card must not stop for longer that five minutes and only to drop off or pick up passengers or goods and the driver must remain within three metres of the vehicle.
Where can't I park? MPS permits don't allow vechicle to stand or be parked between 'No stopping' signs or taxi stands, bus stands, loading zones, construction zones, truck zones or clearways.
Safe and Legal Parking Tips
- read the signs – regulated parking areas are clearly signposted to outline parking requirements. Check the signs for time and Pay & Display restrictions
- use the ‘Parking in the City Centre’ map to find the best options for getting in and around the city centre. You can also follow signage located around the city centre for parking stations
- plan ahead when visiting the city centre, especially for special events such as sporting matches and concerts
- be aware that some parking zones change to Clearways at various times of the day
- do not stop at any time in No Stopping, Clearways or Bus Zones.
- do not park in a Loading Zone unless you are driving a vehicle with the purpose of carrying goods
- parking spots for people with a disability are located in convenient locations in the city centre. Do not park in disabled parking zones unless you have a valid RTA Mobility Parking Scheme permit clearly displayed in your vehicle
- look at alternative options to driving your car including the Gong Shuttle, walking or riding your bike
- remember that on street parking in Wollongong’s city centre is intended for short term stays. For longer stays, consider using an off street parking station or leave the car at home
- ask a Parking Ranger. Rangers will be pleased to provide assistance with parking and directions.

- Burelli Street, Wollongong - various locations
- Crown St Mall and Globe Way - deliveries are permitted in the pedestrian Mall before 9am any day
- Crown Street, Wollongong - south side between Station Street, Wollongong and the Jubilee Railway Bridge (Dicey O'Rileys Hotel)
- 270 Crown Street, Wollongong
- 29 Ellen Street, Wollongong
- 6-8 Gladstone Avenue, Wollongong
- 103 Keira Street, Wollongong
- Keira Street, Wollongong - western side, north of and adjacent to the intersection on Burelli Street, Wollongong
- Kembla Street, Wollongong - north of Court Lane
- Market Street, Wollongong - south side between Corrimal Street and Coombe Lane, Wollongong
