The excitement and energy of being young in Wollongong will hit the stage at the IPAC on 15 June, for a one night only performance of ‘Plays in Progress’.
‘Plays in Progress’ features six short plays, written by six young people from Wollongong aged between 16 and 18 years. For the last two months these young writers have worked with final year Creative Writing students from the University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Creative Arts, and with students from ‘The Drama Studio @ IPAC’ to bring their plays to life.
The plays explore the pressures of playing sidekick to the world’s most evil villain, the experience of growing up and moving out of home, as well as the shock of finding out you are a character in a short play which is primarily about cats.
Council’s Coordinator Youth Services Toby Schaefer-Darling said the plays provide an insight into the lives and cares of young people in Wollongong which audiences typically wouldn’t get to see.
“It’s not common that plays by such young writers receive professional development and are performed at a venue like the IPAC,” Mr Schaefer-Darling said. “Their stories give a fresh insight into what it’s like being a young person in Wollongong.”
‘Plays in Progress’ is a partnership between Wollongong Youth Services and The Drama Studio @ IPAC. It is a one night only performance on Wednesday 15 June, from 7.00pm. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online from www.merrigong.com.au/shows/plays-in-progress
