Wollongong City Council has officially launched the 2011 Viva la Gong festival with a program that offers something for everyone.
On Saturday 12 November, Wollongong’s MacCabe Park will be filled with colour and activity as the community, musicians, street artists and circus performers converge, collaborate and celebrate.

Some of the artists on the bill include Triple J Unearthed winners Alotta Presha, renowned rockers The Dropbears, South Coast band Tommy M and the Mastersounds, and Melbourne outfit Mikelangelo and the Tin Star.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said this year’s festival would be based on the theme of “Spirit and Place”.

“Viva la Gong is a celebration of our community in spirit and place in a beautiful city, the place in which we live,” Cr Bradbery said. “You may have come to Viva la Gong in the past or it might be a new experience. Either way, there really is something for everyone this year.”  Cr Bradbery said the program this year was the most diverse yet, with plenty of things to explore, both in the lead-up to the main event and on the Viva festival day.

“Expect the unexpected from a program bursting with live music and bands from across Australia on four stages, roaming street performances and circus, handmade markets and fresh produce vendors, an international food fair, plus a vibrant street parade and more.”

The festival will include roaming performers, such as Circus Monoxide and the Austinmer Dance Theatre. The festival’s community stage will feature 17 community groups, choirs, singers and flamenco dancers.

There will be plenty of activities in the weeks leading up to Viva la Gong with pop-up exhibitions, theatre performances and cabaret shows just some of the many things on offer. A full list can be found on the following page.
