Wollongong City Council General Manager, David Farmer, has praised the efforts of Council’s ocean lifeguards in the rescue of beach-goers at Stanwell Park on Friday, 21 January.
Shortly before 4pm on Friday, three lifeguards were on duty monitoring and managing the flagged swimming area when sea conditions changed suddenly, sweeping up to 20 bathers from the sandbank into an adjoining gully.
The diligence and swift actions of the three lifeguards saw all bathers returned to shore. Tragically, despite the outstanding efforts of the lifeguards, one of the bathers did not respond to the treatment of lifeguards and attending paramedics.
“The staff members involved in the rescue at Stanwell Park are among some of Council’s most experienced and skilled lifeguards,” Mr Farmer said.
“I would like to commend the great efforts of the lifeguards who were on duty at Stanwell Park in what were extremely challenging and distressing circumstances. It is also important to acknowledge the efforts of the Stanwell Park volunteers and members of the public in assisting in the delivery of acute care to a number of people rescued.”
“This time of year is always busy for our dedicated team of lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers, who work hard every day to ensure the safety of beach-goers. Particularly with holidays such as Australia Day, we urge the public to maintain a heightened awareness of beach safety,” said Mr Farmer.
“Council is indeed very fortunate to have a committed and talented team manning its 17 beaches, protecting and educating our community and visitors to the area.”
Sea conditions can change very quickly, and the public should always exercise caution when entering the water, and follow the advice of lifeguards and lifesavers.
