Wollongong City Council will be carrying out soil testing and analysis over the next week to check the health of the figtree outside Thirroul Community Centre and Library.

The tree has shown signs of a decline in health with leaf discolouration and thinning of the canopy in the last three months
The tree is more than 100 years old and Council has put considerable resources into ensuring its ongoing health.

"We will be carrying out detailed soil testing and analysis to try and determine the cause of the sudden decline in health,” a Council spokesperson said.

Due to the nature of the site and its previous use, any testing will require a number of safety precautions to be taken.  There is no risk to residents and members of the general public. Council will inform all community members at the conclusion of the tree assessment.
