Wollongong City Council has unveiled work on the newly refurbished Town Hall.
The $5.4 million works include a new foyer, fire safety upgrades, improvements to access, and upgrades to the bathrooms and backstage facilities.
Wollongong City Council General Manager, David Farmer said that the works were focussed around ensuring the building met safety standards in order to allow it to reopen for public use.
“The new foyer area features natural light, better access including installation of a lift, as well as upgrading the box office and providing a new snack bar and balcony area.”
“Backstage improvements include provision of new showers, new dressing rooms and improved access to the main performance space.”
We look forward to the Town Hall hosting an annual program of high quality performances as well as providing a space for functions and meetings.”
Council will host a reception on Tuesday, 22 February to thank the community for their support the Town Hall. This event will be followed by a series of free lunchtime activities in the building in the coming months to give the community a chance to enjoy the hall, while we complete the fit out.
The multi-million dollar refurbishment was supported by a $2 million grant from the NSW State Government. Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay MP said she was thrilled at the prospect of our community becoming beneficiaries of the newly refurbished Town Hall.
“This is another example of a successful partnership between the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council, “said Noreen Hay, Member for Wollongong.
“I believe the $2 million from the State Government and the $3.4 million from Council is money well spent delivering win –win outcomes for the Town Hall and the community.”
The Town Hall will open for business in mid year under the management of Pegasus Venue Management.
