Wollongong City Council now offers each household in the city two free on-call clean up services each year.

The on-call clean up service allows each household to place larger items such as the old mattress, a television or car tyre out for general rubbish pick up.

Council Administrator Dr Col Gellatly AO said Council has a new on-call clean up service for all households which allows for more items to be collected, tidier streets and better recycling.

“Council now offers two on-call clean ups each year to help households reduce the larger garbage items,” Mr Gellatly said. “Council works hard to ensure that these items, such as mattresses and old televisions, do not go to land fill. We have a number of systems in place to have the items reused, for example, old mattresses that go to a company that uses the padding to make boxing gloves and punching bags.

“The more items that can be diverted from our landfill site at Whytes Gully, the longer the life of our waste depot will be as well as increasing costs to each household in the future.”

Each household can now arrange for two kerbside collections per year, between 1 July and 30 June twice. Each collection can be two cubic metres, which is equal to two metres in length, one metre in width and one metre in height.

Cleanup materials must be:

  • Placed out no earlier than the day before the booked collection service and no later than 6am on the morning of the collection
Tied, wrapped or boxed as neatly as possible
  • Able to be handled by two people and less than two metres in length
  • Placed behind the kerb in front of your premises
  • Placed so the items will not fall on the roadway or obstruct any footpath
  • If you live in a unit complex, you should liaise with the Body Corporate, Strata Manager or Department of Housing Officer.

You can leave mattresses, old televisions, chairs, tyres, clothing, shoes, electrical items, tools, sporting goods and car accessories out for the pick up.
