Organisers of Wollongong’s annual Viva la Gong festival have described this year’s event as a huge success. About 20,000 people flocked to MacCabe Park on Saturday 12 November to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity. This was double last year’s numbers.
There were shows from Triple J Unearthed winners Alotta Presha and from the New Christs. There were roving performances from Circus Monoxide’s Harvey’s Troupe and the Austinmer Dance Theatre. Seventeen community groups, choirs, singers and flamenco dancers also took to the festival’s community stage.
One of the day’s ‘top secret’ events was a flashmob – or dance routine that’s done without warning – where more than 70 people performed to Chris Brown’s Yeah 3x.
“We’re thrilled by the fantastic response we had from the community for this year’s Viva la Gong festival,’’ Wollongong City Council Manage Community, Cultural and Library Jenny Thomson said. “There is no doubt our community loves festivals that mix great performances and family activities, with market stalls selling crafts and international foods. And it’s certainly set the bar higher for next year’s Viva la Gong.”
Jenny said she wanted to thank all the community groups and people who had thrown their support behind the festival.
“Viva la Gong wouldn’t be the event it is without the terrific support of our community. This year’s theme was “Spirit and Place” and it’s clear from the number of people involved that residents are passionate about this city and its cultural diversity,” she said.
“So a big thank you all of those who were involved. We hope to see you again next year.”
