Wollongong City Council has begun issuing waste kits to every household in the city from this week.

The waste kits include a green waste and recycling collection calendar [which are appropriate for either households in the north or south of the city], an on call household clean up service brochure which highlights the changes to the clean up, and a magnet for residents to place on their fridge with details on how to book in for the on call household cleanup service.

Wollongong’s Waste Services Manager Kathleen Packer said the waste kits are provided to help households plan their waste disposal and ensure that they recycle as much as possible.

“Council’s waste kit provides all community members with the dates that their yellow-lidded recycling bins and green waste bins will be serviced,” Ms Packer said.

“This information is important for residents to ensure that they continue to separate recycling and green waste from their rubbish that goes in the red-lidded garbage bin. If these items are place in red-lidded garbage they will end up in landfill instead of being recycled or reprocessed.”

To help people manage their household waste, Council has also introduced two on call clean ups each year for every household.
The on call household clean up service provides residents with the convenience of booking a collection service at a time that suits each household, with two services now available each financial year.

Council now accepts up to two cubic metres of material and a larger range of items for collection. Computers and televisions (eWaste), tyres and mattresses are now also collected for recycling.  Households are reminded that they must book in for a clean up service before they place their clean up material out, and that their material must not be placed out any earlier than the evening prior to the booked collection date.
