If you live on the escarpment and need help managing weeds on your property, Wollongong City Council will be holding a free weed control workshop.

The workshop will be held in conjunction with Shellharbour and Kiama Councils to help landowners learn how to manage the growth of weeds.

Manager Environmental Strategy and Planning Vanni De Luca said that as the weather turns warmer, weeds in the city will grow. “Council has recently completed the Illawarra Biodiversity Strategy, and we have identified 277 weeds species in the Illawarra,” Mr De Luca said.

“As part of that strategy, Wollongong Council is offering a free weed control workshop where you can learn ways to identify common weeds, and how to control them using best practice methods. The workshop will be delivered by experienced bush regeneration experts who can share their knowledge with weed removal.” It will also feature field demonstrations of various weed control techniques and tips from landholders sharing their own experiences.

Landowners from Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama are invited to attend the three-hour workshop on Saturday 27 August.  The workshop is particularly targeted toward those landowners who manage rural or environmentally zoned lots with native vegetation.

The workshop will be held in Jamberoo from 9am to midday on Saturday 27 August.

For more information and to RSVP, contact Council’s Natural Areas Officer, via email to acalderbank@wollongong.nsw.gov.au or call (02) 4227 7111.

The workshop is offered as part of the Illawarra Biodiversity and Food Project through a partnership of Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Kiama Councils, and the NSW Environmental Trust.
